An agentic harness for POCs

Yeah, I have been thinking about building an open source agentic harness, similar to Devin or Lovable. Maybe call it Devable. It all started from a misunderstanding.

I was asked to help with the problem of many product people vibe coding proofs of concept (POCs) and wanting to share tools that are useful on the surface, but are a disaster under the hood. Making them “production ready” would be, um, challenging. Not auth/authz, tests, no logging, audit trails, monitoring, observability, and the code itself is generally a disaster. I often just see a pile of Python scripts in a top-level directory. No structure whatsoever.

I was being asked to train them, but initially misunderstood the brief as “build something for them.”

Engineering-led AI

I thought about the PAAD (opens in new tab) loops and realized that for a POC, I don’t need great. I need “decent”. Something that can be handed to a development team with the note, “make this production ready” and they can easily take over. That’s not what I’m seeing now.

The problem is that with vibe coding, tech debt accumulates fast. With spec-driven development, it accumulates slower. I can easily automate enough PAAD to make this straightforward, but we still get tech debt. Last night, I had an epiphany about how to fix that. Ensure we have solid e2e tests on critical workflows (plus unit and integration tests) and periodically run /agentic-architecture in the background and auto-fix issues, with notes to the user about needing to retest the application.

With this and a few other ideas I have, I can create a harness that would run in a web browser and make it easy for product to create POCs that are good enough to hand to engineers. They won’t necessarily have all of the logging, auth/authz, etc, but they’d expose seams for it.

And it would be opinionated. In the first pass, enforce TypeScript and React, with Python for the backend.

So why am I not doing this? Time. That’s the one thing I don’t have right now.
